We are a country of car lovers. Despite having a population of just over 5 million, current records report that New Zealand had just under 4.5 million cars in 2020, a figure that has continued to rise. Can we just take a moment to appreciate that that’s more than one car per legal driver?
Car sales continue to soar with 2021 being a record year for car sales, with over 165,000 new cars registered, and 2022 shows little signs of slowing down.
As we enter the 4th month of the year, we explore the top 10 best-selling cars in New Zealand for 2022 so far. The trends that have dominated NZ over the past few years continue to be popular as Kiwis opt for bigger cars that can take them further afield. A reflection, of course, of the pandemic, staying local and travelling throughout our own country. There has been a rush on SUV and Ute sales over the past few months due to the changes in the clean car rebate which came in on April 1st and sees an increase of fees for cars with higher emissions. Whilst SUVs dominate the best-selling car list, the position of the Tesla Model 3 this year reflects the increased demand for electric vehicles and their rise in popularity as we work towards achieving a greener New Zealand.
So, which vehicles are currently flying off the car forecourt?
